The Nine of Swords Tarot Meaning

The Nine of Swords is the penultimate card in the Swords suit. I often see the Nine as the full storm, with the Ten leaving illustrating the aftermath. When we think of things like burnout, this card shows us what the energy is that’s burning us out; the ten is what we’re left with.

If you think of an abundance of air energy out in the external world, you’ll probably picture things like tornadoes, hurricanes, winds that threaten to upend trees and flatten entire neighbourhoods. Air can be such a cleansing element, but it can also be destructive, especially when at its full power.

The Nine of Swords represents that power, and when it’s in our inner world, it can be just as destructive. An abundance of thought, too many voices and opinions, too many ideas, and even an onslaught of negative self-talk can all lead us to feel mentally and physically drained. This is what we’re facing in the Nine of Swords.
