Stop trying to monetise everything in your life - I say to myself near enough every single day 🤣

At the beginning of this year, I wanted to take up a hobby that was just for me. I have a lot of hobbies, from painting to Tarot reading, but I monetise all of them. There's nothing wrong with that, until of course, you find that you've bled all of your hobbies dry of any ounce of fun and joy.

For me, this new hobby was playing the piano. I'd always wanted to learn and had taken lessons when I was younger but I didn't stick with it. Now I'm 11 months down the line and loving it. I can plug my headphones into my digital piano every evening and just play for myself. I don't have to think about what other people think, I do it for me.

I've also started trying to learn how to do latte art at home. As you can see I'm amazing 🤣 but again this is just for my own enjoyment. I don't plan to open a cafe or take part in the barista championship.

Having hobbies that are just for yourself is one of the best ways I've found to slow life down. You have no deadlines or even big goals, you're just enjoying the journey.

Think of yourself as a tree 🌳 you've got a trunk, this is your core self, the most authentic and consistent part of your psyche. Each branch that grows represents different aspects of yourself, as well as different interests, passions, behaviours, habits, and more.

Sometimes these branches are fickle and break off easily, some grow to be big and strong and become an integral part of the whole tree. The point is, not all branches are meant to be permanent. Some are there to serve you in that season of your life and then they fall away.

It might seem very pretentious and woo-woo to think of yourself like this, but I've found - having worked with tools like Tarot and Witchcraft for a number of years now - that there is way more we can learn about ourselves and how we work, by looking at the natural world than we would expect.

I love finding new synchronicities out in nature, whether it's how a tree's bare branches mirror the Bronchioles of the lungs or how the rings of a tree share similarities to our fingerprints. Seeing yourself in the makeup of nature helps humble the ego, connects you with something more primal in yourself and calms the nervous system.
