The Five of Cups Tarot Meaning

The Five of Cups is a card that can help represent loss, grief and what it feels like to heal and move on from those, often devastating, emotional hits. It’s a card that can remind us that loss is a part of life and that even the things that leave us are never really gone, and it’s never the end of the line; there’s always something on the horizon.

The illustration on the Rider Waite deck, in particular, is very good at showing both the dark and light of this card in equal measure. It allows us to see that grieving is human, but that it’s not a space we should stay in permanently. There are still things worth fighting for, and all it takes to fully realise that is to allow for time to rest, recover and heal from the wounds that loss can create.

Because of this, the Five of Cups can also represent a lot of positives. It can show us when it’s time to start that healing process, when it’s time to forgive and practice gratitude for what we are left with and see the beauty in that.
