Are Tarot Cards Unlucky?
There are a lot of myths, legends and misunderstandings when it comes to tarot cards and tarot readings. Whether tarot cards are unlucky is just one of the many questions I get when people enquire about readings.
Tarot cards have been around since the 13th century, and there’s some belief that they may go back even further than that. But it wasn’t until the 1700s that tarot came anywhere near the world of the occult. If this is something you’re interested in learning more about, then I highly recommend taking my online History of Tarot course. Just click here to find out more.
Once the world of the occult really started to take tarot into its bosom and turn it into a tool for divination instead of just a playing card game, that’s when a lot of superstitions and myths started to take root.
Of course, there are many tarot readers, to this day, who believe certain superstitions when it comes to their tarot decks. Things like you shouldn’t let other people handle your deck, or you shouldn’t let your deck touch the floor.
Personally, I feel like this increases the fear around tarot and prevents people who could really benefit from a reading from reaching out.
With that in mind, let’s debunk some terrible rumours about tarot cards.
The myth of unlucky tarot cards
The myth around tarot cards being unlucky most likely comes from the wariness that people would feel around a tool most commonly associated with the occult. When something is deemed esoteric, you’re going to get a level of mistrust and suspicion.
There is nothing supernatural about tarot cards.
There’s also something to be said for bad or unethical tarot readers fuelling these beliefs. There are a lot of scam artists out there, even now, that will use a tarot reading to con someone out of their hard-earned cash. These people are not real tarot readers. Just the same as that email you got from the Nigerian Prince wasn’t actually a Nigerian Prince.
It can also be further fuelled by the support of ‘scary’ cards such as Death, The Devil or The Tower. When the cards are read continuously as an omen of disaster, it makes sense that the tarot would gain a reputation for being something to be wary of and avoid.
It all comes back to the same issue, ignorance around the real meanings of the cards and the true purpose of the cards, which is to inform, support and guide.
Tarot cards do not have control over your future
Your future is not written; you have complete control over the direction your life takes. The only thing that is certain is the life lessons we all have to learn.
To believe that tarot cards are unlucky is to believe that they can change the future. Your tarot reading is there to help and guide you; to be unlucky would be to go completely against those principles.
When I created the Foundational Tarot Course, I really wanted to make sure that I provided enough information and opportunities to explore more personal connections with the cards. This not only helps you understand how complex a card’s meanings can be, but it also helps you create a more intuitive and human tarot reading practice.
