The Magician Card Meaning | Tarot Card Meanings

The Magician Tarot Meaning.png

The Magician is the next card within the major arcana in the tarot and it is the first step into a new world for The Fool. He is someone who is extremely skilled, in a way in which others may see it as otherworldly or impossible. This card is closely associated with magic due to the magician’s ability to create something from seemingly nothing.

The Magician often symbolises that first step out on our own, where we realise just how many possibilities there are in the world. Think about when you left school and you got a job and finally had your own money, the world was your oyster and that is the same energy we see with The Magician.

Upright

The Magician in the upright position is a great indication that it’s finally time to get stuck in creating a new path for yourself or make a start on that new project you’ve been considering. The Magician is the first time The Fool feels his feet touch the ground and signals that the race is now on to get started with the dreams and fantasies The Fool was dreaming of in the previous card.

  • Creation

  • Magic

  • The Conscious Mind

  • Action

  • Skills

  • Manifestation

Depending on its position in the spread, The Magician is a good indication that it’s time to start manifesting those desires and dreams. Instead of living off the high of just imagining what you could achieve, now is the time to put plans into place to actually make it a reality.

You may need to flex some of your skill in order to create your reality. Embrace your creativity and don’t be afraid to try things you haven’t tried before in order to reach your goals. Never be afraid of experimentation as you may find a new path undiscovered.

Reversed

Reversed, The Magician can be seen as something of a conman or a trickster. He can trick others into thinking he is more skilled and capable than he actually is, which can have negative repercussions for others or even himself.

The Magician reversed can also symbolise that you are using your skills and expertise with negative intentions, such as to undermine or sabotage someone else’s progress or achievements. He can also be a little bit too egotistical, believing himself a master before he is ready. This can blow up in his face and cause chaos, so it’s important to check whether The Magician’s ego needs to be taken down a few pegs.

The main properties of The Magician reversed are:

  • Trickery

  • Dishonesty

  • Narcissism

  • Manipulation

  • Over Confidence

The reversed Magician card is all about making sure you’re keeping yourself grounded and realistic. Self-awareness is a big requirement for a reversed Magician, so make sure when this card appears, you are practising more mindfulness and you are fully aware of your, or others, true intentions.

Reading The Magician in a spread

The Magician works with all four elements, this we can see in the card illustration on the Rider-Waite Smith deck. On the table in front of him he has the four suits from the Tarot, which correspond with those four elements:

  • Air = Swords

  • Fire = Wands

  • Water = Cups

  • Earth = Pentacles

This shows us that The Magician card is all about learning to use the tools we have been gifted by nature and the universe, in order to create something that is uniquely our own. It symbolises the power we have as humans and the possibilities that we have available to us in our physical world. With this in mind, let’s take a look at the different ways we can read The Magician.

As an invitation

All the tarot cards can be seen as an invitation to explore a certain type of energy. For The Magician, this invitation may centre around exploring what we are capable of and what opportunities are in front of us. There is a strong feeling of exploration with The Magician and opening up to trial and error and the risk of failure. This invitation can help us learn a lot about ourselves, so let’s have a deeper look into this invitation below.

For The Magician, this invitation could be the following:

  • An invitation to try something new, this could be a hobby or a new class

  • An invitation to test your limits and see how far you can push yourself out of your comfort zone

  • An invitation to explore what paths forward are available to you

  • An invitation to explore your current skills and assess where you could build upon them

  • An invitation to explore any feelings of imposter syndrome

As sage advice

It may be that your Magician card has popped up in a place that is more around guidance and suggestion. The Magician has a great deal of creative energy and a lot of what he has to say may revolve around pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and freeing yourself to find more creative solutions and ways of living.

Some advice The Magician may offer is:

  • Assess the materials you have available to you and see what you can create with them

  • You are capable of so much more, push yourself and see what you can manifest

  • You need to put the action into the law of attraction, what you want will not just appear to you without you putting in the work

  • You need to learn or develop skills in order to reach that next stage in your growth

As a lesson

Sometimes The Magician may appear to offer up a lesson that you need to dive into. These lessons that he offers can help you to reach that next level in your spiritual or emotional development. They can help you level up in your physical worlds, such as your job, relationship or other conscious goals you may be working towards.

Some lessons that The Magician may offer you are:

  • A lesson on pushing yourself out of your comfort zone

  • A lesson about the power of experimentation and trial and error

  • A lesson on goal setting and achieving those goals

  • A lesson on how to successfully manifest your deepest desires

As a redirection

You may not see how The Magician could be a redirection right away, but if you’ve been slogging away at something for a while, The Magician can be a sign that a new approach is needed. It may also be a sign that you’re not being truly authentic to what you want or need in your life and so redirection is needed in order to put you back on the right path.

As a redirection, The Magician could symbolise a need to:

  • Try a new approach to getting what you want

  • Altar your behaviour or belief around what you are capable of

  • Re-focus your goals to make them more attainable or more aligned with what you need right now

  • Re-assess what you are trying to manifest and see if you’re asking for too much too soon

In summary…

The Magician is a card that we have to be open to and allow the room for the energy to be flexible. It’s a card that requires us to question a lot of what we thought we knew already and take new approaches to things that are not performing as well as they could be. All of us have the power to create, but it takes inner work and an openness to being uncomfortable to be successful at it.

7 tarot cards that show you’re a victim of self sabotage

self-sabotage-tarot-cards

As business owners, we are often victims of self-sabotage, we have to rely on ourselves to get shit done, to hit deadlines, to file our self-assessment and pay our taxes. With all of this to think about, our minds can become a chaotic place to be and it becomes a breeding ground for self-doubt and negative beliefs.

The real kicker is that we often don’t realise these negative self-beliefs and doubts are forming until they start to get in the way of what we want. We hit roadblocks and obstacles that stop us from growing or progressing and we assume it’s because we aren’t capable, but it’s this very mindset that caused the obstacles in the first place.

So how do you know if the problems you are currently facing are caused by your own mentality? What tarot cards should you look out for during your readings, that tell you what you’re facing can be solved by a mindset shift?

Seven of Pentacles

SevenOfPentacles.png

The Seven of Pentacles is one of the most common cards I see for ambitious, career driven people. When we are working super hard, we want to be able to see the results of all that hard work, but it’s not always instantaneous.

Patience is key when it comes to being a business owner and solopreneur. We need to be able to trust that the work we put in will pay off in the long run, but many of us get frustrated and give up before our efforts have the chance to blossom.

This card is a sign that your impatience is the cause of your frustration and you need to trust that you will reap the rewards, when the time is right and it’s most beneficial to both you and your business.

Eight of Swords

EightOfSwords.png

The Eight of Swords is one of the ultimate ‘you’re doing it to yourself sis’ self sabotage cards. You’re completely oblivious to how your thoughts are keeping you prisoner and instead, it feels like the entire world is against you.

It feels like no matter what you do, nothing seems to go right you can’t find the right path. What you need to do to solve this is take a step back, stop trying to fight against the tide and go inwards. Take a look at your thoughts and analyse how they could be effecting you in the present.

There’s no point struggling against our thoughts, we need to learn to live with them, so mindfulness is your best friend in this moment. Work with your thoughts and you’ll see how those shackles fall away and life will start to get a lot easier.

Seven of Cups

SevenOfCups.png

The Seven of Cups highlights our lack of focus and indecision. It shows us that we are trying to give our time and attention to too many things and because of that, we are finding it hard to zone in on a specific direction and intention.

The best way to combat the Seven of Cups energy, is getting serious with intention setting. You need to decide what is really important to you in this present moment. Think about prioritising everything that you’re currently drawn towards and distribute your focus accordingly. Listen to your gut, what is it saying to you?

This will help you to set a goal and objective and give you more focus in your work. Keep this intention setting going by setting smaller, daily intentions.

Four of Cups

FourOfCups.png

The Four of Cups shows us that we are not practicing gratitude like we should. Our lack of gratitude is causing us to be unhappy and frustrated with where we are presently. We are so focused on what we don’t have, that we aren’t appreciating everything we’ve achieved so far.

This happens to all business owners at some point. We get so consumed with reaching a certain goal or constantly moving forward, that we paint ourselves into a corner. We forget to enjoy the journey and want to rush right to the end, ignoring everything we achieve along the way.

With the Four of Cups, it is time to put gratitude into action. We need to sit down and think about all we’ve done, what we’ve been through and what we’ve overcome. Be grateful for everything the universe has given us so far.

Wheel of Fortune

Wheel_Of_Fortune.png

How often do you actually go with the flow? It’s something that’s hard to do when you’re a solopreneur. With everything relying on us, we can develop an overwhelming need to control every tiny detail, in fear that all we’ve built will crumble if we don’t.

Controlling every area of our business can be exhausting though, it can cause stress and lead to us worrying about the things that are not in our control. We need to learn that we can’t direct every part of our business and some things need to be left up to chance.

When the Wheel of Fortune pops up, it’s time to address this overwhelming need to control and loosen our grip. Allow things to play out and trust that the universe has our best interest at heart.

Judgement

Judgement.png

Inner judgement, something that can fuel self sabotage. The pressures we put on ourselves will weigh us down and when everything grinds to a halt, it’s time to look inwards to identify the issue.

We can be very hard on ourselves when we are trying to grow and run our own businesses. It’s not easy to be a solopreneur, yet we ask a lot from ourselves anyway. Remember that you’re doing the best you can and if things feel like a struggle, it may be because you are asking too much from yourself.

Write yourself an achievement list and think about the ways you’ve grown and developed as a business owner. Be proud of your achievements and recognise how far you’ve come.

The Hanged Man

TheHangedMan.png

The Hanged Woman (hanged man in Rider Waite-Smith decks) is a sign that we need to stop pushing forward, stop forcing progress and just take a moment to reflect.

This is one of my favourite cards to get, because it is permission to take a break, rest and just pause for a while. We don’t always have to be achieving the next big thing, sometimes it’s enough to just enjoy the position you’ve created for yourself in the present.

The Hanged Woman is a clear message that the universe needs you to just stay where you are right now. Now is not the time to be taking risks or facing challenges, just be still and enjoy life.

What Tarot Cards Should I buy?

threads-of-fate-tarot-cards.jpg

When you’re completely new to the world of tarot, it can be a bit daunting choosing what tarot cards to buy for the first time. There is some mythology that you should only be gifted your first tarot deck, but many of us have gone against this tradition, taking our first tarot decks into our own hands.

What do you need to think about when choosing a tarot deck?

When it comes to choosing your new tarot deck, there are a couple of things you will want to think about. A lot of the decisions you will make when it comes to deciding on the types of cards you want, will depend on your understanding of and experience with tarot reading.

You will also want to think about whether you want to use your cards for personal use or for clients. If you want to use your tarot cards for your own personal readings, then you can pretty much choose any deck you like the look of, just as long as it comes with a guidebook to help you understand the meanings of each card.

If you are looking for a tarot deck to use for client readings, then it is important that you can read the cards intuitively and easily. This means you need to be able to really connect with the imagery of the cards and be able to pull together a story, that also makes sense and connects with your clients.

Connecting with the imagery

The imagery is, for me, one of the most important aspects of a tarot deck, if I don’t connect with the pictures on the cards, I find it very difficult to interpret their meanings. I have to be excited by the cards I’m reading, which is why I always choose cards that look beautiful and inspire creativity in me.

If you are just starting out with tarot and you’ve never even come across a tarot deck before, I highly recommend getting yourself the Rider Waite tarot deck. This is the OG deck and the imagery is something many of us will have seen throughout popular culture. The images on the Rider Waite deck are immensely detailed and they hold a lot of hidden clues and meanings that can be used to give very detailed readings.

Luckily for us modern tarot readers, we have our pick of beautifully designed tarot cards and many of them are based off the Rider Waite meanings, allowing us to transition seamlessly from the original Rider Waite tarot deck, to more contemporary cards, such as the Mystic Monday’s Deck or the Elemental Power Deck.

The images in these more modern decks are very closely based on the Rider Waite images, meaning that if you are familiar with the more traditional illustrations, you won’t have too much trouble interpreting these custom designs.

The most important thing to think about when choosing a more modern tarot deck, is that you NEED to be able to connect with the imagery on a spiritual level. Just because a deck looks beautiful, doesn’t always mean that it will be a good deck for you. Listen to your gut, does the imagery excite and inspire you?

Meanings and interpretations

There are hundreds of books out there that aim to help you understand the different meanings of the cards, but remember that many of these focus on the Rider Waite meanings and only apply to tarot decks that follow the same meanings.

All of the tarot decks in our store follow the Rider Waite meanings, so it doesn’t matter which deck you want to transition to, you’ll have no problem applying everything you’ve already learned.

Keep in mind that not all tarot decks follow the same meanings, so if you’ve learned the meanings of one deck, that knowledge may not always apply to a new deck. Make sure to check before buying whether you’ll have to start from scratch with your new tarot cards.

Quality of the cards

Good quality tarot cards should be thick, easy to shuffle and not too slippy if they’re laminated. All of the decks we have in our store have been tested by myself to determine their quality and they are all excellent!

We have beginner decks that are laminated and a medium thickness, such as the Rider Waite, Mystic Mondays and the matte Elemental Power Tarot.

Pricier than some of our other tarot decks but 100% worth every penny. These cards are sure to last a lifetime, as they are very thick, matte and have a beautiful finish to them. The illustrations on these are for those that are a little more accustomed to tarot reading, as they’re fairly abstract.

The quality of your cards are very important, especially if you want to invest in a good quality deck that will last you forever. If you read tarot for clients, the Threads of Fate tarot is highly recommended.

How do you know it is time to buy a new tarot deck?

If you’ve been thinking about getting yourself a new tarot deck, then that is your sign! If you are completely new to tarot, I highly recommend jumping into the deep end, grabbing yourself a deck and get started doing simple 3-card tarot readings for yourself in order to learn the cards.

If you already have a deck and you’re looking for something a little more impressive or indulgent, then investing in thicker, higher quality cards like the Threads of Fate tarot is highly advised.

The Fool Tarot Card Meaning | Tarot Card Meanings

The Fool tarot card is the first card in the major arcana, it symbolises the very first step on all of life’s journeys. With this in mind, there’s no surprise that this card most commonly refers to a new beginning and taking the first step on a brand new adventure.

There is a naivety to The Fool, but it’s important that we don’t underestimate what it is truly capable of. For us, it can be a freeing and motivational card, that symbolises a new chapter of our lives, one that we feel excited about and ready to face head-on. Let’s delve into The Fool tarot meaning and see how we can read this refreshing card in our spreads.

Upright

When you draw The Fool in an upright position, it is most often a positive sign. Some of the positive meanings of The Fool in the upright position are:

  • New Beginnings

  • Leap of faith

  • Enthusiasm

  • Innocence

  • Spontaneity

In the upright position, The Fool is often a sign that you are about to set off on an exciting adventure, one that you were destined to go on. It can also encourage you to take that first step, put worries and doubts aside and take a leap of faith into the unknown. As the illustration shows, you are excited about this new event in your life, you are riding high on the adrenaline of it all, so keep that energy up and jump without fear.

Reversed

When The Fool is in the reversed position, it most commonly comes as a warning for the person having the reading. Even though in the upright position, The Fool is encouraging you to jump and have faith that everything will be ok, reversed, this can become something of a warning to take care and to not take unnecessary risks. Some of the more negative connotations for The Fool in the reversed position are:

  • Naivety

  • Risk-taking

  • Distraction

  • Stupidity

  • Recklessness

To help me remember the meanings of The Fool both upright and reversed, I often think about the advice I would give to a child or someone who is a complete beginner at something. What positive advice would you give, what warnings would you offer, those are usually the main meanings of The Fool tarot card.

Reading The Fool in a spread

When it comes to The Fool, there are a few different ways we can approach it. Of course, we need to keep in mind the context within which the card has shown itself, which means paying close attention to the question asked in the reading and its position within the spread. Here are a few ways I like to frame The Fool when it pops up for me.

As an invitation

I’ve never liked the idea of tarot offering definitive answers or absolutes, I much prefer to view tarot as a tool for spiritual development and divine guidance. This is where the framing of an invitation comes into play. Instead of viewing The Fool as a flat sign that you’re going to start a new life cycle or start a new beginning, how can you realign that and read it as an invitation? What could The Fool be inviting you to do in context to the question you’ve asked the cards?

For The Fool, this invitation could be the following:

  • An invitation to explore new avenues or new ways of doing something

  • An invitation to explore fear and the current risks of your situation

  • An invitation to connect with your inner child and explore how that would change the situation

  • An invitation to look at any reckless behaviour you may have experienced

  • An invitation to explore the possibilities of a situation and how they would feel

As sage advice

Sometimes the Tarot can be acting the same way as our best friend would, giving us advice and guidance from a place of deep love and respect. That advice may not always be what we want to hear, but I guarantee it’s what we need to hear at that moment. The Fool may be appearing to offer you this advice in order to help you solve your problem or overcome your current challenge.

Some advice The Fool may offer is:

  • It may be time for a fresh start that puts you first

  • Your reluctance to see the reality of a situation is causing a blockage (especially if it’s a question around finances!)

  • Figure out what it is that you want to achieve and go for it, ignore others that may try and bring you down on your way

  • Embrace the passion and enthusiasm you have right now and allow it to take you where you need to be

As a lesson

Tarot can also deliver harsh lessons to us that may be hard to swallow or a welcome addition to our current situation. When we view Tarot as a lesson, it’s important to remember that it’s up to us to decide whether we want to be taught that lesson, or if we’re going to ignore it and carry on regardless. Again, Tarot is not absolute, so nothing is set in stone. The lessons that Tarot offers require inspired action and that can only come from you and your desire to evolve.

Some lessons that The Fool may offer you are:

  • A lesson on growth and becoming a responsible adult with commitments

  • A lesson on caring for your inner child

  • A lesson on when and how to take a leap of faith

  • A lesson around reality and fantasy

  • A lesson around endings and beginnings, especially the lesson of letting something go in order to attract something better

As a redirection

Finally, we have the card as a redirection. The Fool is especially aligned with this framing due to its meanings of new beginnings and fresh cycles. Sometimes we will get The Fool in one of the future cards or in a space that suggests a possible block or outcome. When this happens, it can often symbolise a need to redirect your energy or focus.

As a redirection, The Fool could symbolise a need to:

  • Let go of something that is no longer serving you in order to pursue something that you feel more aligned with

  • Focus on a new area or priority within your life

  • Stop focusing on what others think or taking the advice of others that may be leading you down the wrong path

  • Let go of control and allow yourself to be led by your intuition, rather than your logical brain

In summary…

When it comes to reading The Fool, there is a lot to unpack. With the major arcana cards, we are predominantly focusing on our internal energy, rather than our external world. The Fool is an internal energy that feels fresh, vibrant, innocent and new. Keep that in mind when you read the card and see what messages come to mind when you embrace that Fool energy and place it in the context of renewal.
